The past weekend was rare in that the Boyfriend and I spent it entirely in one city. We decided to take advantage of the relaxing weekend and knock a few things off the summer bucket list.
Over the past few weeks, we’ve been casually planning a picnic in the Arboretum and this weekend everything fell in place. From the weather to the food, we enjoyed a lovely afternoon with each other.
Picnics make a perfect day-date, but there were a few special touches that made it more than just a date and turned it into a memorable day.
The Essentials
- Classic picnic basket
- China (why not?)
- Silverware
- Picnic blanket
The Menu
- Deli sandwiches
- BBQ chips
- Fresh fruit salad
- Macarons
- Fentimans Victorian Rose Lemonade
- Sparkling water
The Music
- A portable speaker (similar)
- Personalized playlist
I happened to find this adorable portable speaker on super sale at Urban Outfitters earlier in the week. It did its job and kept our tunes playing at a nice volume throughout the afternoon.
For the playlist, I used a mix of Matchbook Magazine’s Summer Picnic Playlist (Issue 17, Page 51) and some of our favorite relaxing tunes.
The Entertainment
The best part about a picnic is that you can really spend it anyway you want. Aside from eating, we read magazines, watched the canoes and clouds go by and relished in the time we had just to ourselves.
What makes a summer afternoon special to you?

Sounds lovely! If you like picnics, you might like the book, Picnic in Pisticci – all about what the author has learned from picnics…and there are recipes!
I haven’t heard of that book! Thanks for the recommendation. I will definitely check it out!
